Static Time
No matter whether any process or technology has its unique development history.
Engraving is an ancient traditional craft technology, and its continuous development process is a story-telling history. Not only that, like most crafts, the production process of engraving can also be understood as a story-telling history, or more precisely, a unique timeline.
In the same way, photography also has its unique development history and its storytelling.
Visual Timeline
Using the method of filming the production process of engraving to combine and visualize the timeline of engraving, the timeline of film photography, and the timeline of my research, to let viewers who do not understand the engraving process or the working principles and methods of the film become aware through the visual presentation of these three timelines.
The main action of traditional engraving is to carve the pattern you need on the metal plate. In short, it is to take the engraving with your dominant hand and produce an effect, while the other hand controls the direction of action. The action of engraving is actually very similar to the operation principle of film in photography, which is convenient for further research in the future.
The film is in the form of a roll. When installed in a film camera, the left and right reels control the moving direction of the film. The film will pass through the middle lens one by one for exposure. Therefore, we can say that the operating principle of the film is that the left and right axes determine the direction of rotation of the film, and the lens part in the middle is used to expose the film, which is very similar to the main action of engraving.
So it was finally decided to use film shooting to present the timeline of engraving.
The most direct and strongest way to present the timeline of engraving by film shooting is to break down the engraving process step by step and shoot sequentially.
Therefore, we need to find the most iconic action or situation in the process of engraving to shoot. Here I summarize some iconic situations in the production of gold carving: for example, the search for a suitable pattern at the beginning of carving gold; transferring the pattern to the metal plate with nail remover; the basic carving action; There will be unexpected situations such as flying knives due to slipping, cutting fingers, accidental sliding of metal plates, etc.; sharpening of knives is required in the middle; grinding of metal plates, etc.
These situations can be shot and recorded one by one with film, and the timeline of gold carving can be presented by film photography.
